October Poster

Another totally new and fresh design from Sarah Bowie this month.

"I was really inspired by the early Ballet Russe posters for this one: the colour, movement, energy and fairy-tale feel, especially the amazing costume designs by Bakst, just feel right for this time of year.  I had intended to do a much more stylized piece, but every 'proper' drawing I did seemed to lack the energy of my original rough sketch.  So in the end, the rough sketch won out, and I left her exactly as she fell on the page, scars and all.  And I like her just the way she is."

Christmas Cracker Market 2012

For the last two years we have joined forces with Block T for a bumper market in December over in Smithfield and then we've come back and done our final market of the year in Newmarket just before Christmas.

This year, however, there will be just ONE Christmas Flea Market, taking place in Smithfield. The 2012 Christmas Cracker is going to be our biggest yet with over 120 stalls over three days in Block B just off Smithfield square.

It was an amazing weekend last year, loads of craic and loads of really great creative stalls, a real testament to Dublin (and Ireland's) Independent trading scene. We found out that theres a lot of people who when given the choice will gladly step away from Grafton st. and do their shopping elsewhere. We certainly did anyway.

So Applications for this years stalls are now open and will remain open until November 15th. Price for the three days is €150 and if you need to team up and share the days with some friends, by all means do.

Poster catchup

wheeewphf....that was a bit of a hiatus there from the blog. Sorry folks, guilty of neglect.
Since our last post about our gazebos getting robbed, we had a collection at the flea and raised an immensely generous €900 towards replacing them. THank you all SO SO much for helping us out. We really do appreciate the generosity that people have when someones luck is down. Thank you!

The summer has been......well not quite a summer but it has been and gone, thats for sure. We had a couple of stormy days over the last few months but nothing that our outdoor stallholders couldn't handle and they always go home with a smile on their faces (cuz they're great!) We're still hoping for an indian summer in September anyway, so fingers crossed for a last umphf of sunshine before the autumn.

OUR GAZEBOS GOT ROBBED!!!!

Its a sad day when your house gets burgled and they fleece the joint. Its an even sadder day when you realise they've taken the keys to your van as well. And its an additional kick in the balls when it dawns on you that the six gazebos you borrowed from another Market were in the back of the Van. Five days later the Guards found the van down in Kilmainham but there was nothing left in the back.

We now have to replace these gazebos and are tearing our hair out to think where we are going to find €3000 to do so. We are a non profit driven organization and work on seriously tight margins, we just about keep things afloat from month to month. Whats more, we only trade for 12 days a year so cash-flow is not huge.

So we are asking for your help. We will be taking donations at the market this month, anything big or small, to help out with buying the new gazebos. In fact if everyone who comes down to the market gives just €1 it could cover the cost.

So please come down and show your support if you can. We would really appreciate it!

Little Treasures

The Project Twins in Cork took on the April Poster. First thing that struck us was some sort of Communist era influence, but Michael told us that they basically just wanted to create a clear and simple graphic poster based on the idea of finding little treasures at the market. Love it. He did admit though that there would be some influence by modernist and constructivist posters and also by some old Polish posters and book covers.

Flea-cing Prohibited

Great Poster by Steven McNamara of Roji Design this month.

Dublin Flea Market to me is about rummaging through stalls finding bargains whilst having some fun. So naturally whilst looking over a photo of a bemused sheep that I had used previously in a Christmas Card venture that read 'Baa Humbug', I thought of the pun 'Fleecing Prohibited' for the Flea Market. I quite liked the idea of reusing an image similar to how the flea market re-purposes old items too so I went ahead and ran with the idea.
